On seeing the Light-Infantry perform their Exercise on
Thursday last, their Anniversary. By a Spectator.
VERITAS EST.
O great Apollo thou assist my pen,
To pay the tribute due these worthy men;
Celestial nine assist my anxious song,
Direct my pen, and guide my feeble tongue;
I would be still, --but merit calls aloud,
And Sol assents from yon transparent cloud.
In Meeting-street, view them in ranks appear,
All valiant heroes, both in front and read;
And now, behold the noble C--m--l comes,
Receiving just applause, from fifes and drums;
They at his sight, immediately prepare;
With emulation, hear the words--take care!
. . . [8 lines]
But now again the drums and fifes are heard,
Observe the heroes, for the march prepar'd;
